TRACTION WINCH

SPOOLING

HEPBURN 80KTSU

TRACTION WINCH

Driven by two radial piston motors through a spur gear reduction with spring set hydraulic brakes. The winch will be powered by a diesel driven HPU equipped with a Rexroth Model AA4VG-180 variable displacement pump with constant tension capability. During spooling operations, the new (or replaced) wire will be routed through the traction winch to provide the required tension or holdback to meet the manufacture or customers’ requirements.

Most new wire is sent from the factory on lightweight shipping spools and the wire is generally rolled on with little or no tension. Installing the wire directly onto a winch/crane can be done with a typical spooling machine but the hold back tension is minimal to reduce knifing the wire into itself or damaging the shipping spool. By utilizing the Hepburn 80KTSU, the new wire can be rolled off the shipping spool, routed through the traction winch and onto the customers winch/crane in one smooth motion. As the customers winch/crane provides the required pull in force, the traction winch will provide an adjustable and constant back tension as needed to meet demands.

CONSTANT TENSION OPERATION

The primary value of the Constant Tension Feature of the Rexroth pump is the ability for the operator to control the position of a load (hold back tension) by manipulating the remote pressure relief valve while the joystick is in the hoist position. In other words, as long as the customers winch/crane maintains a pull capacity slightly higher than the constant tension set on the traction winch, the wire will proceed onto the receiving drum under tension. Spooling rates (speed) vary on the size of wire and tension required. Should the customers winch/crane reduce the pull force, the traction winch will actually maintain the tension between the two until the operator intervenes.
